Eyal visited John Wang in Taiwan (en route to a confernce in Okinawa…) for the first time after 15 years of good but remote contact (and a joint paper). The Wang lab in Academia Sinica is an awesome molecular biology lab working on fire ants (of course!) and nematodes. Lots of cool science, especially the fire ant’s sex determination locus they discovered. Eyal gave a talk on the new social chromosome we discovered in Cataglyphis, which is homologous to the first social chromosome discovered in fire ants by John and collegues more than a decade ago. It was also a great opportunity to meet Volans again, and other colleagues.
